The Autonomous School Program promoted by the right wing coalition governing the country at the beginning of the 1990s set forth radical changes at a national scale in the way schools were managed. Controversial measures such as parental cofinancing of some school activities and the widening of community participation were heavily criticized by opposition leaders from the left. Amid this political upheaval the program was implemented, and it stood in place for sixteen years until the left-wing party led by Daniel Ortega assumed power in late 2006 and abolished the Program completely in 2007, with the intention of implementing a new reform, which at the time of writing is yet to be formulated .

These provide, Martin argues, a better alternative than the fragmentation of both curriculum and pastoral support that often characterizes state practice. In the final chapter (chapter 12), “Pathways to Learning: Deepening Reflective Practice to Explore Democracy, Connectedness, and Spirituality,” we consider what can be drawn from the alternatives.
